Genus Boveella Sawyer, 1975

 

Diagnosis: Floating form of the cell body spherical, about 20 µm across. Radiating pseudopodia, clear and conical, extending up to 50 pm. Pseudopodia retract quickly in the presence of light. Locomotive form of this genus unknown. Cytoplasm without crystals. Cell covered in organic detritus which obscures intracellular detail. Form of nucleus unknown.
Monospecific.
Type species: Boveella obscura Sawyer, 1975

 

Ecology: Marine.

 

Remarks: Sawyer (1975): Body mass spherical, refractile, and with numerous long slender pseudopods which range up to twice the length of the diameter of the body mass. Stellate forms with body covered by particles or organic detritus; clear protoplasm distinct only in extended filopods. One or more filopods may curve
at the tip but folding or bending occurs only at the base. In direct light from the microscope lamp the filopods are withdrawn quickly and amoebae assume a refractile spherical form of irregular shape and are easily overlooked. Extended locomotive form unknown.

 

 

Boveella obscura Sawyer, 1975

 

Diagnosis: Resting form spherical to oblong with approximately 12 long tapering filose pseudopods which project from all angles of the central body mass. Body mass refractile and covered with particles of organic debris, including diatoms which obscure the protoplasm, and inclusions in the endoplasm.
Filopods retract quickly in the presence of light, and body form resembles an aggregate of debris. Maximum extended form of body ca. 20 µm in diameter
with filopods ranging to 30 µm long or 20 µm wide with short papillate pseudopods ca. 5-6 µm long. Papillate pseudopods may disappear entirely when amoebae are in maximum contracted state. Nucleus not observed.

Present in two of seven collections and probably present but not recognized in others.
Trophic form: Locomotive form unknown. Resting or feeding form typical of the genus. Amoebae found only in sea-water cultures observed with a water immersion objective, and elongate filopods found only when light was reduced with dark green filter. Amoebae not found on agar culture medium and tolerance to dilute sea water unknown.
Cysts: Unknown.
Reproduction: Mitosis not observed.
