Dactylosphaerium polypodium
Dactylosphaerium polypodium, 56 µm broad

Genus Dactylosphaerium Hertwig & Lesser, 1874

Diagnosis: Shape of locomotive form variable, but cells usually ovoidal with numerous tapering subpseudopodia. Most of these are conical and extend from the hyaline edge, but they can also radiate out from surface of cell. Single spherical nucleus. Granular cytoplasm without cytoplasmic crystals. No posterior uroid. Cell very slow moving.
Type species: Dactylosphaerium polypodium Schultze, 1854.

Ecology: Reported from both freshwater and marine muddy sediments. Presumably feeds on algae since the cytoplasm of the type species contained yellow/green/brown bodies thought to represent partly digested food particles.
