Genus Platyamoeba Page, 1969

Diagnosis: Locomotive form generally oval or linguiform but occasionally fan-shaped with extensive hyaline zone; some with faint surface folds. Length usually from 10 to 35 µm. Nucleus spherical usually with a central nucleolus but occasionally cup-shaped or parietal. Most platyamoebae have floating forms with blunt radiating pseudopodia. Cell coat of those studied by TEM as fuzzy glycocalyx with hexagonal arrangements of filaments (not glycostyles as in Vannella). Common in freshwater and marine habitats with at least 13 named species. Most described species are marine. Only freshwater and soil forms produce cysts.

Remarks: Page (1983) considers this genus to be synonymous with Lingulamoeba Sawyer, 1975.
