Cochliopodium spec.
Diagnosis: Cell in locomotion rounded to oval, no subpseudopodia observed, only a broad anterior margin of hyaloplasm. Nucleus vesicular with central granular nucleolus. Micro scales relatively large; in phase contrast they show a funnel-shaped apical part connected to a base plate by a column of at least two stalks, converging towards the top.
Dimensions: Length in locomotion up to 50 µm (n=7); nucleus c. 6-6.8 µm; height of micro scales c. 2.3-2.5 µm, top of the scales 1.2-1.5 µm width, column about 0.4-0.6 µm in diameter; base plate c. 1.7-2.0 in diameter.
Habitat: Freshwater, peat bog, Diepveen.
Remarks: This species is remarkable by its relatively large micro scales, which are easy visible light microscopically in phase contrast.
