Genus Deuteramoeba Page, 1987

Diagnosis: Smaller polypodial Amoebidae with the nucleolar material in fewer pieces than in Amoeba, with fibrous inner nuclear lamina not organised in the honeycomb pattern and with a glycocalyx differing morphologically from that of the larger Amoebidae.
Moving cells generally 70 to 180 µm in length with one dominant pseudopodium and pseudopodia without ridges. Anterior hyaline caps frequently fill with advancing granuloplasm. Posterior morulate uroid. Cytoplasm with crystals, most as paired inclusions or as bipyramidal crystals. Nucleus spherical with nucleolar material in a few granular pieces or as a central endosome. At least one species forms cysts.
At the ultrastructural level the cell coat has filaments.

Type species: Deuteramoeba algonquinensis (Baldock, Rogerson & Berger, 1983)

Ecology: Freshwater and terrestrial.

Remarks: Two named species, one unusual (D. mycophaga) in that it feeds on fungi.
