Diagnosis: Multinucleate organic-walled monothalamous foraminifera. Test very flexible, elongated to broadly pyriform, lens- or spindle-shaped. Aperture terminal, straight or oblique. Cell with internal peduncle, surrounded by a hyaline peduncular sheath. Nuclei spherical, ovular.
Molecular features: The partial SSU rDNA sequences included in this family contain between 1017 and 1113 nucleotides, the GC content ranges from 46.4%–49.3%.Pairwise distances within Lieberkuehniidae range from0.104−0.209, the overall average is 0.072.
Type genus: Lieberkuehnia Claparède and Lachmann, 1859.
