Playfairina caudata
P. caudata from Thomas, 1961

Genus Playfairina  Thomas, 1961, emend. Golemansky & Todorov, 2006

Diagnosis: Shell sub-cylindrical, narrowed at the region of the aperture, with circular or
oval transversal section, when the shell is laterally compressed. The posterior end
with caudal horn or rounded. The obliquely disposed round or oval aperture is with
a brief evaginated collar. The shell is composed of endogenous round or oval siliceous
plates of different diameter, with many small plates in the interstices between
them. The collar is composed of 1-2 rows of smaller elliptical plates. The inside of
the aperture is bordered by row denticulate apertural-plates. The filopodia are like
those of Euglypha and Trinema.

Type species. Playfairina caudata Thomas, 1961

Species: Two species are currently recognized, P. caudata and P. valkanovi.
A third species, Playfairina compressa, is known only from the brief original description by Golemansky (1966) and has never been confirmed in subsequent studies. The characters used to distinguish it—mainly the stronger lateral compression and slightly different proportions—fall within the documented variability of P. valkanovi. No modern revision of the genus recognizes P. compressa as a valid species, and no additional records or illustrations have been published. Until new material becomes available that allows a reliable comparison, the taxonomic status of P. compressa must be regarded as uncertain (species inquirenda).
