Leptomyxa arborea Berney, Geisen & Burberg, 2016
Diagnosis: Flattened, expanded highly branched and reticulate cells. During locomotion amoeba with long tubular body with some lobopodia at both ends extending in several directions and also with subpseudopodia. Multinucleate, nuclei of vesicular type, numerous, small, spherical. Specimen are not sensitive to light.
Dimensions: Length 50—4600 µm. Nuclei 2.5—3.0 µm
Habitat: Soil and freshwater.
Geographical distribution: Type location: Grass roots from a meadow outside the Biocenter at the University of Cologne, Germany. Over the years I have found several specimens between basalt blocks in the Gooimeer, a large lake in the Netherlands. They were up to 4.6 mm large.
Remarks: Resembles L. reticulata in size and general appearance, but usually is more ramose and expanded than the latter species. In locomotion it is usually more “tree-like” than L. recticulata, strongly branching in anterior part with usually one single posterior end. However these two species are very similar; the only ultimate differentiating character is the SSU sequence.
