Genus Schwabia  Jung, 1942

Diagnosis: Shell ovoid, circular in cross-section, chitinous with small mineral particles which produce a smooth surface, aperture terminal.

Ecology: Freshwater and alkaline forest soils (S. terricola).

Four species.

Type species. Schwabia irregularis Jung, 1942, Refs.: Bonnet and Thomas (1960), Chardez (1966).

Remarks: Jung described this genus and species only based on empty shells and “while no living animals were observed, it is not known whether this amoeba belongs to Lobosa or Filosa”. Jung believed that this amoeba falls within the group of filose amoebae and is related to Pseudodifflugia. He mentions three diagnostic features:
1 shell is ovoid;
2 pseudostome is not invaginated and has a faintly thickened border;
3 more or less siliceous structure, but it is not clear what he exactly means by that.

The genus was named after G.H. Schwabe, who collected the samples in Chili and sent them to Jung. The samples with Schwabia came from a forest stream and pond, a moor and wet mosses.

I moved this genus to Cercozoa, after observations of living cells with filose pseudopodia.
