Assulina minor, after Van Oye, 1958

Assulina quadratum Van Oye, 1958

Diagnosis: Van Oye (1958): “The new species is clearly distinguished from the known — or even uncertain — species of the genus Assulina by its very characteristic square shape. Decloître found a similar form, for which he provides an illustration, but he does not consider it to be a distinct species.”

Dimensions: Van Oye (1958): Length 44–46 µm; width 34–38 µm (n = 5).

Ecology: Freshwater, in marshes.

Distribution: Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Remarks: This appears to be a dubious species. One of Van Oye’s drawings — see above — resembles Assulina collaris, and the others can hardly be described as “quadrate”.
