Diagnosis: Shell slightly narrowing towards the aperture, sides practically parallel. In cross-section elliptical (the ratio of the two axes is 1:1.8). Shell base semicircular in profile. Aperture broadly elliptical, surrounded by 6-8 scales measuring 2 x 4 µm with a rounded medial tooth and two peripheral projections.

Dimensions: Bonnet (1960): Shell length 20 µm, cross-section 9 × 14 µm, aperture 7 × 10 µm.

Ecology: Soils, fresh water; rare.

Infraspecific taxa.
E. anodonta magna Schönborn, 1964.
Differs from the typical form in its larger size. The shell length is 30-47 µm, the cross-section is 24-28 x 15-18 µm, the ostial idiosomes are 8-12 µm.
