Centropyxis mirabilis Bartos, 1940
Diagnosis: Shell in dorsal view broadly elliptical, in the middle slightly constricted on both sides, made of mineral particles of various sizes. At the fundus the shell terminates in 3 hollow horns, closed at the end with a plug of organic consistency. Surface of these horns, which protrude obliquely towards the back and attach to the upper half of the shell end, is covered with extremely fine mineral fragments. Aperture eccentric, large, almost circular. At the front edge of the aperture, there is initially a broad bridge, a little tapering and finally spreading again near the dorsal wall of the shell, where it attaches. This bridge can be clearly seen under the microscope from the ventral side of the shell. In the majority of Centropyxis species, in which such a bridge is present, it does not run from the front edge, but from the rear edge of the aperture obliquely upwards to the dorsal wall, where it is attached.
Dimensions: Length 162-165 μm, width 121.5-122 μm. Height of the frontal side about 40 µm, body part as high as 54 µm. Horns 16.5 µm long. Aperture 67.5 μm, about 32 µm from the front edge of the shell and 67 µm from the rear edge.
Habitat: Freshwater, in permanently submerged mosses. Central Europe.
